McLaren 650 S. It’s really, really, really fast.

Traffic police hear it all the time. “I didn’t realise I was going so fast”. “Yes madam, of course you didn’t”. They roll their eyes and issue the fine anyway. However in the 650s, it’s true. You simply don’t realise how quick you are going until you look at the dash. The power is so linear, so smooth, that it feels how the USS Enterprise looked; suddenly all the stars are whooshing past faster than the speed of light, glasses of water undisturbed.

It’s a hell of a thing, this machine. The styling is all super futuristic, aggressive, lean. When you have clambered in past the scissor door, closed it and look down its flank via the wing mirror, it really does look like you are at the helm of some kind of star fighter. The view is all angles and aero and awesomeness.

It’s as precise as a star fighter too. Quick, direct, deft. And fast. Fast fast fast. I’m not sure if I have mentioned that it is fast..?You can pootle along in fully auto mode, or turn the starfighter controls round to sport, or track, if you are brave – and on a track. In sport you alter the aero, only adding to the whole star fighter feel, and it sharpens things up (as if it really needed it). The brakes did take some getting used to, you need to press far harder than you might expect, but once you get the hang of them you realise how effective they are – not surprising really, as the discs are about the size of the London Eye.

Driving on country lanes was an interesting experience, as the car is wider than the panama canal. Other road users saw it coming and dived, panic stricken and awed, into the bushes. Perhaps they were worried about the cost of an insurance claim – this car doesn’t look cheap, even to the uninitiated.

It’s a true triumph of engineering, this car. It must be outstanding on a track. Hint hint 😉
